Beeswax used as an Alternative to Plastic Wrap?

15. Aug. 2017 von

Plastic wrap is convenient – but unfortunately, it’s not exactly eco-friendly since it ends up in the garbage. The solution: beeswax cloths! They consist of natural materials and are reusable! On top of that, you can easily make them yourself. Plus, a vegan option is possible too!

Brilliant: beeswax cloths

For everyone looking for a sustainable solution to cover and wrap their food, there is good news: beeswax cloths.

The materials used are exclusively natural! It consists of cotton and natural wax.

The application is ingenious: through body heat the wax becomes elastic and clings to any dish, similar to plastic wrap, sealing them airtight.

In addition, this natural wrap can always be wiped down with a bit of soap and lukewarm water, which makes it reusable.

Tip: there’s also a vegan option made out of Carnauba wax.

Maintenance

When washing the cloths, the water shouldn’t be too hot. Otherwise, the wax will come off. That’s why, for hygienic reasons, it isn’t suitable for meat.

If the waxy layer ever becomes porous, it can be melted in the oven at 200°F so the wax can spread again.

Alternatively, you can put the beeswax cloth between 2 pieces of parchment paper and iron it.

Create your own wax cloths

The financially and environmentally advantageous option is to create your own cloths!

It’s not difficult and above all, it’s sustainable. You can even reuse the remains of natural wax candles as well as cotton and linen fabrics. This is upcycling at its best!
